A visit to Mont Blanc

img 8016 (1)

Would you like to go to the roof of Europe and admire Mont Blanc up close?

The Aiguille du Midi and Mont Blanc, but also the Montenvers train with the ice cave, are the must-sees in Chamonix.

Mont Blanc is located on the border between France and Italy and at 4810 m is the highest mountain in the Alps and the EU.

Take the gondola to the Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 meters and enjoy the spectacular views. You can even see far into Italy and Switzerland when you are at the top. An absolutely unique experience!

But even if you just look up, through the old streets of Chamonix, you can admire Mont Blanc, the Bossons glacier and the Aiguille du Midi in peace and create beautiful memories.

Access to the Aiguille du Midi is via two separate cable cars (65 seats per cabin), and the journey time is 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the crowds.

Here are some tips

• Go on a clear day. If it is cloudy, you will see little and that would be a shame. Before visiting, check the top of the Aiguille du Midi via the webcam

• Book a gondola time slot online in advance. Plan your purchase well in advance to benefit from advantageous rates up to at least 3 days before use.

• Think about layers of clothing, sunglasses and sunscreen. The temperature at the top can drop below -5 degrees Celsius in summer. Gloves, a hat in combination with a windproof jacket are not an unnecessary luxury.

• A visit quickly takes between 2 and 3 hours (you may have to wait in line to go up or down). So take plenty of time to enjoy this attraction!

• Children under 3 are not allowed in the gondola to the Aguille du Midi and it is not recommended for children under 5.

• You will find a small restaurant with a terrace and a view of the cable car and the mountain peaks (Bar Plan de ‘l Aiguille) at an altitude of 2,317 metres. Nice to have a cup of coffee or hot chocolate on the way back!

Mer de Glace

Once in Montenvers, take the gondola to access the Mer de Glace glacier

From Chamonix, a small red cog train takes you to Montenvers from Montenvers where a new adventure awaits: a gondola lift takes you to the Mer de Glace glacier.

Please note: the cave is accessible via a staircase, with approximately 170 steps, and there is no possibility for people with walking difficulties or in a wheelchair to reach it.

The various entrances and combination passes can be booked in advance via this website.
